Who actually buys 0mg

People finishing the job. You started at 20mg, moved down to 10mg, and the nicotine is not really doing anything any more. 0mg is the last step, and it is the one most people skip. They jump from 10mg straight to nothing, miss the routine more than the nicotine, and end up buying a disposable from a petrol station three weeks later.

People who never wanted the nicotine. Some vapers are here for the flavour and the habit of it, not the drug. There is no rule saying you have to take nicotine to use a vape.

People cutting down without quitting. Keeping a 0mg pod next to a 20mg one and alternating between them is a quieter way to halve your intake than trying to halve the strength in one jump.

Stepping down properly

The path most people take is 20mg to 10mg to 0mg, with two to four weeks at each step. There is no prize for rushing it, and dropping too fast is the most common reason a step-down fails.

One thing worth knowing before you start: as the strength comes down you will usually vape more, not less. That is your body chasing the nicotine it was getting before. It settles after a week or so. If it does not, you have probably moved down too early — go back up a step and try again in a fortnight. That is not a failure, it is how it is meant to work.

Does 0mg actually satisfy?

Partly, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.

What 0mg keeps is the whole physical routine — the hand to mouth, the draw, the vapour, the flavour, the thing to do with your hands on a break. For a lot of people that is most of what they were getting anyway.

What it loses is throat hit. Nicotine provides most of the catch at the back of your throat, so 0mg is noticeably smoother and some people read smoother as weaker. Menthol and ice flavours cover the gap best, which is why the nicotine free ranges lean that way — a Blue Raspberry Ice or a Classic Menthol at 0mg feels much closer to what you are used to than a plain fruit would.

Does the vape duty apply to nicotine free liquid?

Yes — and this one surprises almost everybody, so it is worth being direct about.

Vaping Products Duty applies whether or not the liquid contains nicotine. HMRC's guidance says so in those words. The rate is a flat £2.20 per 10ml from 1 October 2026, and it is charged on the liquid, not the nicotine in it. A 12ml nicotine free pod carries £2.64 of duty, with VAT then charged on top of that.
