Vaping Myths You Might Believe
With vaping being such a young technology, it’s not surprising that so many people believe the myths surrounding it.
Vaping has only been around for just over a decade, and so there’s a lot of research which is still being done into the technology. With a lot already on the market and many newspapers jumping on the hysteria train whenever new information surrounding vaping potentially being harmful arises, it’s no surprise that when some of these findings on the dangers of vaping are debunked, many people miss the memo on their falsity. So what are the everyday myths that people may take for granted, even to this day?
Nicotine causes cancer
Due to the high amount of carcinogens in tobacco products, it’s not surprising that so many people think that e liquid and the nicotine inside it probably contains carcinogens. No one would blame you for identifying nicotine as a carcinogen, or cancer causing chemical. The fact of the matter is that nicotine is not a carcinogen and whilst it has been known to stimulate tumors already in the body, it is relatively harmless in small doses. Nicotine is an addictive substance however, and if you are using it as a smoking cessation tool, it is a good idea to match your tobacco intake with the level of nicotine in your premium e juice.
Vaping will cause popcorn lung
Popcorn lung, or bronchiolitis obliteran is a disease which begins to damage the tissue of your lungs. Starting on a microscopic level, the lungs are damaged irreparably until they cause fatigue, wheezing and in some instances death. The first cases came from a popcorn factory in the USA where workers contracted the disease due to the diacetyl food flavouring agent in the butter popcorn they were making. This same agent was used ins oem vape juices, and so a media flurry led to fears of vaping causing this debilitating lung disease as well. In reality, the prolonged exposure to the raw chemical is what caused the workers illnesses, and whilst some vape flavours have been known to contain diacetyl, it has never been at the same magnitude as to what the workers were exposed to on a daily basis. That being said, most e juices have responded to the fears by making the products in their vape shops diacetyl free.
Passive vape is dangerous
In reality, there are no harmful chemicals in passive vape. The cloud you blow out is merely flavoured water vapour, most of the nicotine having been absorbed on the inhale.
Vaping is a gateway to smoking
Last year some studies attempted to show that vaping can be a gateway to smoking tobacco products. These misleading studies looking back have not necessarily been debunked but have been seen to be misleading. The information showing the amount of people who vaped and turned to smoking was not objectively incorrect but the lens focused on their place within the framework rather than the larger picture.
