Top Tips to Stop Your Coil From Burning

No longer will burnt coils leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Here are some handy tips to keep it cool.

Burnt coils have always been one of the most unpleasant of vaping malfunctions. With burnt coils leading to everything from toxic chemical inhalation to burning vape juice in your mouth, coil mishaps are something you’ll want to avoid. The coil is an important part of the vape device as well, and as with all oft-used electrical devices, will need to be cared for by you as its owner. Below you can find some of the main problems which arise from a burnt coil, how they come about and how best to stop yours from meeting such a bitter end.

What is a vape coil?

A vape coil is the component in a vape device which carries the heat and electricity from the battery to the atomiser. This crucial connecting wire can be made from a range of different conductive metals including kanthal, nickel, titanium and stainless steel.

What causes it to burn?

Coils are made from metal. Metal, by its very nature is at risk of corroding when in contact with heat and electricity. This means that over time your coil will begin to degrade, a naturally occurring inevitability which you can’t avoid.

What to look out for

This means that eventually your coil will have to be replaced. But when do you know its time? Below are some of the tell-tale signs of a tired coil but in general they should last for between 1 and 4 weeks. These clues are useful for working out when it might be time to change your coil within that timeframe.

Spitback

Spitback is a prime symptom of a burnt coil. Spitback occurs when your UK e juice cooks instead of vaporising on the atomiser. The congealing vape juice begins to boil and begins spitting out of the device, like oil in a pan. Some of this spitback will make its way out of the drip tip, leading to burning hot vape juice in the mouth. This is in part because of an overheated coil, as well as an overpowered vape device.

Lessened vapour production

A faulty coil will logically lead to lessened vapour production. The coil is the connecting element between your battery and your atomiser. If this is not working at its full capacity If your device is producing less vapour than usual, it could be because your coil needs replacing.

Burnt taste whilst vaping

Another symptom which is completely understandable, a burnt coil will produce a burnt taste, as oxidised metal makes its way into your vape hit. This has the knock-on effect of also polluting your vape hit with toxic chemicals, one of the main reasons you quit smoking in the first place!

How to defend against coil burning

These tell-tale signs are completely preventable; all you need to do is make sure you keep on top of the below points, ensuring that you tend to your device as often as necessary. Like any piece of tech, your vape device will require you to look after it.

Coil priming

You don’t want to eb firing up your vape device and inhaling nothing but metal particles. To avoid this, when you install your new coil and fill up your vape tank, take a few hits in your vape device without hitting the fire button, to ensure that the vape juice in your tank is saturated into the wick. After a few of these hits, you can commence vaping proper.

Lower the wattage or voltage

A higher power setting might lead to your coil burning due to the added intensity of electricity flowing through it. Prolonged high wattages will lead to your coil degrading at a quicker pace. Try lowering the wattage or voltage on your variable device to preserve your coil for longer.

Test your temperatures

Many new vape devices come with temperature control settings. As with the variable voltage and wattage devices, lowering the maximum temperature of your vape hit will keep your coil from wearing itself out.

Top up your tank regularly

Dry hits burn the coil; what you’re essentially inhaling here is a hot and dry piece of wire with no e juice. This will of course have a detrimental effect on the coil. Keep an eye on your tank and fill it regularly.

Up your PG ratio

Higher PG juices are thinner than VG heavy ones. This means there is less of a risk of vape juice congealing and cooking on the coil, one of the prime causes of spitback.

Sweet juices are more likely to burn

As with VG heavy juices, sugary flavoured vape juices are also likely to be stickier and congeal on your vape device at higher temperatures. If you’re worried about the health of your vape coil, try a milder flavoured e juice.
